Apple Dessert Pizza

Apple Dessert Pizza

Be the first to review!
There is something to be said for a good homemade Apple Dessert Pizza. With its soft dough, warm cinnamon apples and a buttery oat crumble all finished off with a vanilla glaze, it is the kind of cozy treat you want on hand for a weekend or when the family is over. In a way it is like an apple crisp but in the more fun form of a pizza, so it is as suited to a potluck as it is to some fall baking. You don’t have to go to any trouble to make it feel special; one slice will do with its golden crust and tender fruit under a nice drizzle and the crisp topping.

  • 4 tbsp butter softened
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
For the Vanilla Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk plus more as needed
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 1 large mixing bowl
  • 1 measuring cup set
  • 1 measuring spoon set
  • 1 stand mixer with dough hook
  • 1 vegetable peeler
  • 1 kitchen knife
  • 1 cutting board
  • 1 large skillet
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 baking pan
  • 1 sheet parchment paper
  • 1 rolling pin
  • 1 medium mixing bowl
  • 1 fork
  • 1 small bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 1 spoon for drizzling
  • 1 oven

Method

Make the Pizza Dough
  1. Add warm water and instant yeast to a large mixing bowl. Let it sit for a few minutes until slightly foamy.
  2. Add the sugar, salt, oil, and flour. Mix until a soft dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough in a stand mixer for about 10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  4. Divide the dough into 3 equal balls. Use 1 dough ball for this dessert pizza and save the remaining 2 for other pizzas.
Prepare the Apple Topping
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F / 175°C. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced apples and cinnamon.
  3. Cook for 6 minutes, or until the apples are slightly softened. Remove from heat and set aside.
Assemble the Dessert Pizza
  1. Roll out 1 dough ball into a round or rectangle, depending on your pan.
  2. Place the dough on the prepared pan and pre-bake for 7 minutes, or until the crust is just set but not fully browned.
  3. Spread the cooked cinnamon apples evenly over the crust.
Make the Crumble Topping
  1. In a bowl, combine the quick oats, brown sugar, flour, softened butter, and cinnamon.
  2. Mix with a fork or your fingertips until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  3. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple layer.
Bake and Glaze
  1. Bake for 25 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the crumble topping looks crisp.
  2. Let the dessert pizza cool for about 10 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Add a little more milk if needed to thin the glaze.
  4. Drizzle the glaze over the warm pizza. Slice and serve.

Notes

  1. For a softer, sweeter apple topping, cook the apples until tender before adding them to the crust.
  2. For a more textured bite, leave them slightly firm. The extra dough balls can be used for savory pizzas, another dessert pizza, or frozen for later.
