These Sloppy Joes are the kind of hearty, family-style meal that always hits the spot. Ground sirloin is cooked with buttery onions and bell pepper, then simmered in a rich sauce that’s sweet, tangy, savory, and full of classic comfort-food flavor.

Ingredients
 
 

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 bell pepper diced
  • 2 lbs ground sirloin
Seasonings & Sauce
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp seasoning blend Flavortime southern seasoning or similar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 tbsp fresh garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 10 oz fire-roasted tomatoes pureed
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 1/2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
For Serving
  • Hamburger buns toasted
  • cheese slices (optional)

Method
 

Cook the base
  1. Melt butter in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Add diced onion and bell pepper, cook for a few minutes until softened.
Brown the beef
  1. Add ground sirloin and cook, breaking it up well until browned.
Season
  1. Stir in black pepper, garlic powder, and seasoning blend.
Add sauce ingredients
  1. Add Worcestershire sauce, fresh garlic, brown sugar, pureed tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, and apple cider vinegar.
  2. Mix everything well.
Simmer
  1. Lower the heat and let simmer for 18 minutes, stirring occasionally until thick.
Serve
  1. Spoon onto toasted buns, add cheese if you like, and serve warm.
